Beyond the Change: 4 Essential Tire Care Tasks

Charger
Tires are where your car meets the road. They are critical for traction, performance, ride, and safety. With all these important functions, it is a good idea to keep your tires in good working order. Although your tires will wear out, there are a number of steps you can take to make them last longer and perform better. Here are four important steps in tire care that are worth considering.

Proper Inflation

Keeping your tires properly inflated is an important tire care task. Having too much or too little air in your tires will cause uneven wear patterns. You'll also see an increase in fuel economy with properly inflated tires. Check your tire pressure frequently and compare that pressure to the recommended level, which is usually located on the driver or passenger side door frame. Keeping your tires aired correctly will increase tire life and decrease damage to other parts of your vehicle.

Tire Rotation

Each vehicle is different and you should check your owner's manual for the exact interval, but tires should be rotated about every 5,000 miles. Front and rear and left and right tires wear differently depending on driving characteristics and the condition of your vehicle. By rotating your tires from back to front and side to side, you'll even out the wear on all four tires. Be careful if you rotate your tires yourself, as some tires are uni-directional, meaning they can only go on either the right or left side of the vehicle.

Tire Balancing

It is not very often that a tire and wheel combination is perfectly balanced after installation. This is where tire balancing comes in handy. Using a balancer, the tire and wheel assembly weight is equalized so that it runs smoothly at high speed. Balancing decreases vibration from the wheel and tire combination and can lead to a smoother ride and less wear and tear on the suspension system and tires.

Alignment

Your vehicle's suspension system is comprised of many parts that all need to work in unison to provide a smooth ride. The act of aligning the suspension takes into account three items: camber, toe, and caster. While you don't necessarily need to know the definition of each of these terms, you should be aware that if any of these three are out of line, it can have negative consequences for your tires. Improper alignment can result in tire feathering, wear to the inside or outside of the tread, and heel/toe wear. If your tires are showing signs of wear it is worth having your vehicle professionally aligned. You'll save your tires and get a safer and more responsive driving experience. We all know that buying new tires is an expensive proposition, something that none of us looks forward to. With proper inflation and regular rotation, balancing, and alignment it is possible to get a lot of miles out of your tires. Just know that spending a little money now on tire care will pay back in fewer trips to the tire store down the road. Image via Dodge.com

Is Your Car AC Not Working? Visit Your Chrysler Dealer

Your car AC not working could be caused by mechanical, electrical, or refrigerant issues. Each problem presents its symptoms, and your Chrysler dealer has expert technicians to find and fix the problem. These are a few examples of AC problems we can fix for you. Burning Smell From the AC When you turn on the AC, you expect cold air, not burning smells. A burning smell is an immediate cause for concern. We advise shutting the AC down immediately and calling our service department. Our Chrysler-trained technicians will investigate the cause of the problem. If you continue to use the AC, you could damage one of its components or potentially start a fire in the AC system. more If the burning smell has the odor of hot metal, the problem could be from a worn condenser, a damaged compressor, or a failing evaporator. In all these cases, the hot metal smell means they're overworking. If, however, you smell burning plastic, this means that you could have a short in the wiring or other electrical problems. The burning plastic smell means insulation on some of the wiring is burning. Musty Smell From the AC A musty, earthy smell from the AC may be a sign of mold in the AC ducts or a build-up of stagnant water that isn't draining from the system. This foul smell can also be bad for your health as mold spores can cause allergic reactions for many drivers. Stagnant water can collect in the AC if the drainage pipe becomes blocked. This pipe runs through the floor of your car and leaves the water puddles you see underneath a car in summer. Mold spores can enter your AC in the air drawn in through the vent for cooling. In winter, when your AC is off for several months, these organisms can multiply in the ducts and AC air filter. Our technicians can swiftly remove this problem by using an anti-mold cleaning solution which we'll pump into your AC. AC Is Only Cold When You're Driving Fast The dial on your dash controls your AC temperature. If you notice that your AC is colder when you're driving fast, the most likely cause of the problem is a worn compressor. The speed your car is traveling should not affect the AC temperature. The reason the AC becomes colder is that the faster airflow through the air vent forces the worn compressor to work harder. Our technicians will need to examine the compressor, and we'll repair or replace it depending on its condition. If you see signs of these or any other AC problem, call us at Ourisman Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Alexandria. Photo by Kaboompics from Pexels

3 Things To Know About Jeep's Future Plans

For more than 80 years, the Jeep brand has been linked with rugged off-road capability, freedom, and adventure. Although this rough-and-tough image is to a large extent the main reason for the endearing popularity of the brand, Jeep is staying with the times and has turned the page to open a new chapter in the Jeep story— one which starts with Jeep's new slogan, "Zero Emission Freedom." Here's a sneak peek at some of Jeep's future plans. 1. Autonomous Off-Road Driving Autonomous driving is one thing. But autonomous off-road driving seems like a whole different kettle of fish. During a recent EV Day event, Jeep showed a captivating video of the possible future trajectory of the much-loved Wrangler. In the video, a concept BEV model of the Wrangler is shown, with the word "Freedom" emblazoned on the hood. The year is 2025, and since the Wrangler is equipped with biometric recognition, it automatically unlocks and starts when it recognizes the face of its owner. Another scene depicts a drone flying in front of the Wrangler. It provides some extra light for the couple inside who are driving off-road during the night. Fast-forward to 2030, the couple is seen camping next to their four-door Wrangler, which features transparent doors. The video ends with the couple lying on their backs in the Wrangler stargazing, while the vehicle pilots itself around the off-road rails. more 2. A Full Complement of EVs by 2025 Although rough off-road-focused Jeep SUVs are probably not the type of vehicles that you may think of when you picture eco-friendly EVs, Jeep is committed to going green. Back in 2019, the first plug-in hybrid Renegade model was introduced in the European market and was closely followed by the 2019 Compass. In 2021, the first hybrid Jeep, namely the Wrangler 4xe, became available to American consumers. Recently, Jeep has announced the imminent arrival of the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe, which will possibly be followed by a Grand Wagoneer 4xe. Apart from the expansion of its plug-in hybrid lineup, Jeep has announced that it plans to offer a fully electrified, zero-emissions model in every SUV segment by 2025. Although Jeep didn't explicitly debut the Wrangler BEV model at the recent EV Day event, the video featuring the concept model at least seems to point in this direction. 3. Jeep Goes Grand With the 2022 Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, Jeep is entering another unchartered space, namely the luxury SUV segment. Jeep has resurrected this famous name from the past to bring a roomy and upscale three-row Jeep SUV to the market. Apart from a brawny V-8 engine, the Wagoneer boasts a 10,000-pound towing capacity and an upscale interior that's heavy on tech. The SUV, for instance, can be fitted with up to five displays, of which one is dedicated to the front passenger. If you're looking for an even more luxurious family vehicle, opt for the Grand Wagoneer, which features an abundance of tech, premium materials, and deluxe features. Judging from what we know about Jeep's plans for the future, we're in for a fun, innovative, and eco-friendly ride.
