Just hearing the phrase off-road vehicle probably conjures up images of a Jeep vehicle, traveling over rock-laden roads, around downed trees, and through otherwise unmanageable terrain. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler is a compact SUV that's an impressive off-road vehicle. It's practically king of the niche, as it can tackle almost any type of obstacle in its way. Capable Powertrains When it comes to encountering terrain once the pavement ends, the Wrangler is an absolute beast. All Wranglers come standard with four-wheel drive and a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that produces 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. It also comes with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. However, you can upgrade to receive two other engines. The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine produces 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque and is available with either the two- or four-door Wrangler. The four-door Wrangler also offers a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel that produces 260 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. These two engines only come with an eight-speed automatic transmission. more Specialized Off-Road Trim Although the 2021 Jeep Wrangler comes in 12 trims, one trim stands above the rest when it comes to off-roading. The Rubicon, which is named after the 22-mile off-road Rubicon Trail in Northern California, comes in two- and four-door models and is meant for difficult terrain. It comes standard with a variety of features, including rock rails to protect the vehicle's underbody when off-roading, a sway bar, a front stabilizer bar, and a four-wheel-drive system. To give you extra traction on difficult terrain, you get low-range gearing and locking rear and front differentials. It's also equipped with 17-inch wheels with 33-inch off-road tires, as well as an Off-Road Plus mode, which enables you to drive at higher speeds while keeping the locking rear differential engaged. With the push of a button, you can adjust the throttle, traction control, and transmission shifts. When you drive off the beaten path, it's important to remain just as safe as you would if you were traveling on a paved roadway. For the 2021 model year, Jeep added a TrailCam for the Sahara, Rubicon, and Gladiator models. This camera system gives you a forward-facing view when you're off-roading so you can avoid obstructions on the trail more clearly. You can view the images on the 8.4-inch touch-screen display, which is accessible through the Off-Road Pages. If your Wrangler trim has the 7-inch touch-screen display, you have access to a special tire-fill alert system. It honks the horn once if your optimal tire pressure is reached when you top off your tires, and it honks three times if the pressure is too high or low. This system comes in handy if you're someone who partially deflates the vehicle's tires when driving on sand or over rocks and then visits the service station to refill the tires before you hit the road.
