How to Properly Clean Your Car's Engine

If your car needs its engine cleaned, you may be wondering if you can do this task yourself. While cleaning car engines is often touted as being difficult, it's actually a fairly easy job you can do right at home. Here are the steps to take when cleaning your vehicle's engine to ensure your safety and a job well done. more Cool Your Engine If your car has recently been running, open the hood and give the engine at least 20 minutes to cool off before beginning to clean it. This ensures that you don't get burned while cleaning the engine as well as that you don't damage the engine as a result of rapid contraction. Brush Out Debris Debris can get caught in the engine bay and needs to be removed before you begin cleaning the engine. If debris is left in the engine bay, it can eventually lead to engine damage and even fires if it's near the electrical system. Common debris found in engine bays includes grass, pine needles, twigs, and even small animal nests. Remove Coverings If your car's engine has plastic coverings on or around it, remove those before beginning the cleaning process. You can also remove the negative terminal on the battery as well as the battery itself if you want. You can wash both the negative terminal and plastic covers separately. However, do not wash the negative terminal with water. Rather, wipe it down with a damp cloth to avoid damaging the terminal. Unplug the Battery If you didn't remove the negative terminal in the last step, be sure to disconnect it before cleaning the battery. Loosen the bolt that connects the negative battery, and remove the ground cable from the terminal. You can also unhook the positive terminal as well. Spray the Engine with Degreaser After you've taken all necessary precautionary measures, you can now spray degreaser on the entire engine compartment. While any degreaser will work, you may want to choose a purpose-made engine degreaser for the best results. Spray the degreaser starting at the broom of the engine and working your way up to ensure full coverage. Be sure to avoid spraying the engine degreaser on other parts of the car that have paint, as the degreaser can cause the clear coat to come off and damage the paint. Soak and Scrub Let the degreaser sit on the engine compartment for several minutes, with five minutes being recommended for especially dirty engines. After the degreaser has soaked, use a stiff bristled brush to scrub the degreaser into areas that are grimier. You can also use a steel-toothed brush for larger areas of grease or grime. Rinse the Engine Once you've finished degreasing your engine, rinse it off with a garden hose. Avoid using a high-pressure water hose to avoid damage to the engine or disconnecting any wires. If you have any questions about how to properly clean your car's engine, give us a shout at Ourisman CDJR and we'd be happy to help you out. image via pixabay

CDJR Vehicles Honored by Strategic Vision's 24th Annual Total Quality Impact Awards

Every year, Strategic Vision asks new car buyers what they liked most about their new vehicles within the first 90 days, along with what they didn't like about the vehicles. The company then analyzes the results to come up with the best models — according to drivers in real-world situations — in several different categories. In 2018, they surveyed 42,000 people, and several Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles came out on top. The 2018 Dodge Durango For the fifth year in a row, the Dodge Durango came out on top in the midsize SUV segment. Owners loved the combination of utility, class-leading towing capabilities, and advanced technology. The aggressive styling of the Durango was another reason why drivers liked this SUV. This truck comes standard with an award-winning 3.6-liter V-6 engine that produces 295 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. It has a best-in-class towing more capability of up to 6,200 pounds. The optional 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 generates even more with 360 horsepower, 390 pound-feet of torque, and a towing capacity of 7,400 pounds, while the newest SRT model has a 475-horsepower V-8 engine. The 2018 Jeep Renegade Jeep Renegade owners like the fact that this vehicle delivers excellent off-road capabilities and a nice on-road ride. Its versatile roof also gives passengers an open-air feeling. The powertrains in the Renegade include a new 1.3-liter turbo four-cylinder that gets up to 177 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque, and it comes with an automatic stop-start function to help increase fuel efficiency. The 2018 Jeep Renegade also gets new, advanced safety technology including adaptive cruise control, a self-parking system, and front parking sensors. The 2018 Ram 2500/3500 The Ram 2500/3500 received the top honors for total quality among Heavy Duty Pickup Trucks. These trucks offer unbeatable capabilities in the three-quarter and one-ton pickup class. This truck can tow up to 31,210 pounds when equipped, and it can handle up to 7,380 pounds of payload. The Ram also offers its owners some innovative features that you don't find in other pickup trucks, such as the five-link coil suspension and the option for the air suspension. Ram offers the 2500/3500 in several trims that range from a basic work truck to the ultimate luxury vehicle with the latest infotainment system and convenience features. These trucks also offer the option for the RamBox locking storage system in the bed which provides a secure place to keep tools and gear. The Dodge Brand In addition to the three vehicles from the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram lineups that won Strategic Vision awards, the Dodge brand was also named the best Mass-Market Brand in total quality. From the class-leading towing power and durability of the Ram 2500/3500 to the technology and off-road capabilities of the Dodge Durango and the Jeep Renegade, there is a lot to love about FCA U.S. vehicles. The Total Quality Impact Report offers insight into how customers feel about their vehicles in their own words, and there is good reason why FCA came out on top in several categories. The Mechanics Guide to Choosing the Right Oil

Choosing the right kind of oil is something that is usually left up to the service station to decide. Follow these mechanic's tips to arm yourself with knowledge about choosing the right automotive oil for your vehicle. Viscosity is an important indicator of the best oil for different operating conditions. The lower the number, the less it will thicken in the cold, so different oils should be used depending on if you're in Minnesota or Death Valley. Once you have the right viscosity determined, you can begin shopping for oil. Note that it is recommended that once you choose a type of oil, that you stick with it moving forward to maintain the best performance. Let's explore the different types of oil that are available for consideration. more Conventional Oil This is the most common type of automotive oil used at dealerships, and it is the least expensive at the automotive store. It's generally quite basic, offering little in the way of additives, and is best for car owners who are fastidious about frequent oil changes. Premium Conventional Oil This is the standard new car oil and is available in common viscosities that best respond to most climate variations. With this type of oil, it is important to have the oil changed every 4,000 miles or four months to keep your car operating smoothly. Full Synthetic Oil Full synthetic oil is designed for high-tech engines and has some advantages over conventional oils. Synthetic oils are designed to be more effective at resisting breakdown, withstanding high temperatures, and flowing at cold temperatures, which reduces engine wear during start-ups on frigid mornings. Synthetic oil is more expensive than conventional oil and can cost two to four times as much as the traditional option. That said, it can extend the life of the oil and reduces the need for oil changes to only once or twice per year. Some car manuals indicate a requirement for synthetic oils, but older cars can also benefit from synthetics as they can prevent sludge buildup that often plagues older vehicles. Synthetic Blend Oil Comprised of premium conventional oil mixed with a dose of synthetic oil, a synthetic blend is designed to provide for somewhat heavier loads and associated higher engine temperatures. Their formulation makes them somewhat less volatile, meaning they evaporate less and reduce oil loss. The additional protection they provide make them popular with larger trucks and SUVs, and their cost is just a few cents more than conventional oil. High Mileage Oil An option for a rapidly increasing segment of the market, high mileage oil is specially formulated for cars with over 75,000 miles. These oils were formulated specifically to respond to specific needs of aging engines. Regular oil changes are important to protecting and extending the life of an engine, and the choices of oils seem nearly limitless. Before you choose an oil, be sure to consult your car manual for instructions on the optimal oil to use in your particular vehicle. Image via Flickr by Jonesemyr /Under use by CC BY-ND 2.0

What Makes a Jeep Trail Rated?

You've seen the badge on the back of Jeeps everywhere, but what does it mean for a Jeep to be Trail Rated? That silver emblem guarantees that a Jeep vehicle can conquer dangerous terrains. Here's what makes a Jeep Trail Rated. What Does It Mean for a Jeep to Be Trail Rated? When Trail Rated Jeeps were first introduced in 2004, they changed the way consumers bought vehicles. Now drivers could own a vehicle that was built for both the road and off-road adventures. The Trail Rated badge has become a trusted indicator of a vehicle's durability and adaptability to any circumstance. In order for a Jeep to become Trail Rated, the Jeep must pass strict specifications regarding vehicle traction, maneuverability, ground clearance, water fording, and off-road articulation. Those specifications allow a Jeep to overcome bad weather, challenging terrain, and other obstacles without hindering the driving experience. The current Jeeps to have passed these tests are the Wrangler, Compass, Renegade, Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. more What Earns a Jeep its Trail Rating? In order to become a Trail Rated vehicle, a Jeep must meet certain standards in a variety of tests. Many of these tests take place in the icy, rocky terrain of Northern Michigan while others require the Jeep to traverse the boulders of the Rubicon trail. While on these trails, a Jeep's performance is tested on the following areas. Water Fording You wouldn't dare take most vehicles through a body of water that would reach up past the chassis, but a Trail Rated Jeep is designed to take on such an environment. When a Jeep enters a high level of water, it seals off electrical connections and body openings. Air intakes are also positioned higher up on a Trail Rated Jeep to avoid being flooded. Maneuverability When driving off-road or in dangerous road conditions, every movement of the tires matters. Jeep takes this into account when their vehicles become Trail Rated. Your Jeep must be able to respond quickly enough to avoid obstacles without losing traction. That means these Jeeps have precise steering and wheelbases optimized for handling narrow trails and dangerous situations without putting you in danger. Articulation Whether on the road or off, a Trail Rated Jeep must be able to remain stable. When a Jeep is articulate, that means the vehicle has a flexible suspension that can handle potholes and sharp dips in the road or trail. It also means that a Jeep can remain stable when one or more tires are hanging in the air. Ground Clearance While out on the trail, the last thing you need is for a log or rock to damage the under-body of your vehicle. Fortunately, a Trail Rated Jeep provides the ground clearance necessary to avoid such obstacles. Following the tests that allow a Jeep to become Trail Rated, these vehicles are guaranteed to be fun, flexible, and fortified. They're designed to keep you safe without sacrificing performance.
