While Alexandria, Virginia, offers plenty of exciting things to see and do, sometimes you just want to get away for a while. That's when you should consider checking out some of the off-road trails in the area. When you're interested in spending some time in nature, make plans to head to one of these top off-roading destinations near Alexandria. Lee Ranger District The Lee Ranger District in the George Washington & Jefferson National Forests has several off-road trails worth exploring. One of the most popular is the more Peters Mill Run and Taskers Gap Off-Highway Vehicle System, which is also the largest in the state. Here you'll find close to 40 miles of rugged off-road trails that offer plenty of twists and turns for excitement. Keep in mind that the trails are open to all users, so you'll have to watch out for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Budds Creek Motocross Park Located in Mechanicsville, Maryland, Budds Creek Motocross Park is a natural-terrain motocross track that offers the perfect combination of jumps, hills, corners, and soil with a deep and tacky consistency. In addition to hosting several professional races throughout the year, you can also stop by the track to check out the amateur races. On days the track doesn't have a race or other special event, be sure to visit for practice hours and put your own skills to the test. Tuscarora Trail The Tuscarora Trail stretches for 250 miles through Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. The trail was originally created as an alternative route for the Appalachian Trail when it was feared that the development would force the closure of the main trail. However, when the National Scenic Trails Act of 1968 passed, the Appalachian Trail was preserved and the Tuscarora Trail became an excellent option for off-road excursions. You can choose to complete the entire trail, or you can pick different sections to explore. Savage River State Forest Travel to Grantsville, Maryland, for a chance to explore the scenic Savage River State Forest. The area has several trails open to off-road vehicles, including the newest option: St. John's Rock ORV Trail and Campground. This is the first-ever trail system on Maryland Department of Natural Resources land specifically designed for off-road vehicle enthusiasts. The trail system features a full-size rock crawl area for four-wheel-drive vehicles, technical trails for all-terrain vehicles, and single-track trails for motorcycles. When you want to enjoy multiple days of fun, you can stay at one of the sites at the campground. Assateague Island National Seashore Assateague Island National Seashore is a barrier island on the Atlantic Ocean coast. While the island is famous for its herds of wild ponies, it's also an excellent place to go off-roading. The island is open year-round for off-road beach recreation. Just remember that it has a limit of 145 vehicles, so you might want to call ahead to ensure it's open. Whether you want to cruise down the sandy beach or check out some forested trails, these unique off-roading spots near Alexandria offer a great way to get out and enjoy nature. When you see a good-looking car or truck passing by, often the first thing that catches your eye is the chrome detailing. Most car manufacturers, including Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram, use it on their models to one extent or another. It shines in contrast to the paintwork and adds a touch of class to any vehicle. However, if chrome is not cared for, it can become dull and pitted with grime and road contaminants. Before cleaning your chrome, it is best to know what type it is. Types of Chrome The chrome parts and detailing on your car could be either metal or plastic that has undergone a chromium-electroplating process. Going back to the 1970s and before, the chrome parts would all have been metal. However, as the process for plating chrome on plastic was developed, more manufacturers switched to this lighter and more cost-effective option. more While looking great, plastic chrome is not as hard-wearing as metal and should be cleaned with care. Too much or too vigorous polishing and buffing can reveal the underlying material. Cleaning Chrome To start cleaning your chrome, you should hose down the areas you are working on. Remove as much as possible of the physical dirt, mud, and contaminants. Then, if you are cleaning the grille, for example, apply a good quality chrome cleaner to its surface and use a soft brush to help work it in and get rid of the more persistent bits. A good chrome cleaner will contain lubricants that allow you to clean the chrome without scratching the surface. Work on small areas at a time and don't allow the cleaner to dry on the chrome. If you find stubborn stains that you can't shift, you can use a fine synthetic steel wool to help you remove them. Once the area is clean, rinse it off with water. Then, using a clean microfiber cloth, carefully dry the chrome. You don't want stains from the cleaner or any water spots. Polishing For polishing metal chrome parts, your car's manual usually contains advice about the best materials to use to clean and polish them. Alternatively, you could ask at your local auto-detailing shop. They will suggest the right types of compounds, polishes, and tools to use for the type of chrome on your vehicle. For metal, an electric rotary buffer might be the best tool for bringing out a high-quality and long-lasting shine. Plastic chrome needs a gentler approach, so using a mild sealant and polishing by hand will give you the best results. Apply the polish to the surface and slowly work the product into one small area at a time. Gradually polish each area until there is no longer any of the product visible and your chrome is gleaming. The protective wax in the polish seals the surface, making it more resistant to staining and oxidation, reducing the need for frequent cleaning. Regularly cleaning your 4x4, especially after you've been off-roading, will help to keep it in pristine condition, particularly the shining chrome. This truck comes standard with an award-winning 3.6-liter V-6 engine that produces 295 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. It has a best-in-class towing more capability of up to 6,200 pounds. The optional 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 generates even more with 360 horsepower, 390 pound-feet of torque, and a towing capacity of 7,400 pounds, while the newest SRT model has a 475-horsepower V-8 engine. The 2018 Jeep Renegade Jeep Renegade owners like the fact that this vehicle delivers excellent off-road capabilities and a nice on-road ride. Its versatile roof also gives passengers an open-air feeling. The powertrains in the Renegade include a new 1.3-liter turbo four-cylinder that gets up to 177 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque, and it comes with an automatic stop-start function to help increase fuel efficiency. The 2018 Jeep Renegade also gets new, advanced safety technology including adaptive cruise control, a self-parking system, and front parking sensors. The 2018 Ram 2500/3500 The Ram 2500/3500 received the top honors for total quality among Heavy Duty Pickup Trucks. These trucks offer unbeatable capabilities in the three-quarter and one-ton pickup class. This truck can tow up to 31,210 pounds when equipped, and it can handle up to 7,380 pounds of payload. The Ram also offers its owners some innovative features that you don't find in other pickup trucks, such as the five-link coil suspension and the option for the air suspension. Ram offers the 2500/3500 in several trims that range from a basic work truck to the ultimate luxury vehicle with the latest infotainment system and convenience features. The new models of our favorite vehicles come out every year, and it's always an exciting time to see the updated versions that are available. From Jeep to Ram to Dodge, many new models are coming out with updated looks, added features, and overall enhancements that will make your driving experience that much better. 2019 Jeep Wrangler Pickup People are always excited when new versions of the Jeep Wrangler come out, and the 2019 Jeep Wrangler Pickup is no exception. This model comes with a seven-slot grille and LED daytime running lights. There are also rectangular taillights that are similar to the current model. It's rumored that it will come with both two-door and four-door models. The Jeep also has a single tailpipe on the driver's side, which is different from the current model which has the tailpipe exiting on the passenger side. more 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Even though it's several years away, there is much anticipation around the 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. It's rumored that it will have three rows, making it the first SUV in the Jeep line with this feature. The SUV may look similar to the Grand Cherokee but is expected to have a wider variety of upscale features. 2020 Ram Rebel TRX The 2020 Ram Rebel TRX will have 707 horsepower and will also come with the TR Model that has 520 horsepower when it comes out next year. Many are excited about this version, as the company is known for making their SUVs and trucks even more powerful each year. It's suspected that the Hellcat 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 engine will also be seen in this truck. 2019 Dodge Durango GT The 2019 Dodge Durango GT has been getting updates for the past eight years, and the new version will have even more enhanced features. The engine options will be the same and there will still be the five trim levels, including GT, SXT, SRT, Citadel, and R/T. However, the Dodge Durango GT will have the most upgrades, including cloth seats that are available for the first time. There will also be updated 20-inch wheels with a Brass Monkey or Satin Carbon finish. The new model will have dual heat extracts and a center air duct, which gives it the look of the V-8 models without actually having a larger engine. When you think of electric vehicles, you probably think of either little compact hatchbacks that are really only good for city driving or expensive luxury cars full of high-tech gadgets that still aren't any good at cross-country trips. But would you believe that Jeep is coming out with an electric Wrangler? The planned vehicle will be a plug-in hybrid rather than a full EV, but that still means you could tackle some serious trails in a Wrangler without a single piston firing. The New Wrangler It's a good time to add more options to the Wrangler because Jeep has only recently come out with the JL, the latest Wrangler generation. It had been a while since the last major redesign, and so the JL brings with it important features like driver assistance, a full-color display in the instrument cluster, and advanced capabilities like a winch-ready bumper and a heavy-duty electrical group ready for power-hungry more accessories. It only makes sense that a new plug-in hybrid powertrain would be on that big list of changes. The Announcement During the Los Angeles Auto Show, Jeep's CEO announced that the Wrangler will have a plug-in hybrid option starting in the year 2020. This means the Wrangler will have the kind of range you get from a hybrid but also the ability to shut the engine off completely and let the quiet electric motor run the wheels for a few dozen miles. This will be a perfect fit for drivers who want a Wrangler with enough endurance to tow their camper trailer to a remote park and who also want to hear the nature around them on a rough trail. The Electric Movement The Jeep Wrangler isn't the only Chrysler Group model to get a hybrid design. Not so long ago, the Chrysler Pacifica minivan got a plug-in hybrid version of its own. The upscale Pacifica offers several features you won't find among its competition, and at this point that includes the only plug-in hybrid minivan out there. It's not as efficient as other plug-in hybrids thanks to its size, but the Pacifica Hybrid is far more efficient than its competition with 84 combined MPGe and an estimated 566-mile range. The Future-Proofing The 2020 plug-in hybrid is just one of the changes coming to the new JL Wrangler. The older model had been infamous for being something of a gas guzzler, and so Jeep has put a priority on making sure the new model wouldn't turn away conscientious customers. For one thing, the new Wrangler's base engine is more efficient than the old model was, and you can get even better efficiency from a turbo I-4 engine that uses electrical assistance to get 25 highway mpg. It will also get a diesel option for even better fuel efficiency. The plug-in hybrid Wrangler will be a big step toward creating a rugged off-road vehicle with good fuel efficiency. In 2018, the Jeep Wrangler saw its first redesign in more than 10 years. There is a bit of an overlap for the 2018 model year, as the old Wrangler was still in production until April 2018. The newly redesigned Wrangler is available in both two- and four-door models and with a variety of trim levels. In addition to a new exterior design, the interior received a number of upgrades and improvements as well. High-end materials, well-organized controls, and upgraded infotainment options are just some of the additions you'll see on the 2018 Jeep Wrangler. More Luxurious Interior The new Jeep Wrangler features upgraded materials and a variety of luxurious upgrades, including heated front seats and steering wheel. The leather-wrapped steering wheel also has controls for convenient access to phone, audio, voice, and more. Dual-Zone Automatic Temperature Control keeps both the driver and front passenger comfortable at their own desired temperatures. more If you use your Jeep in a cold-weather climate, the addition of heated mirrors is a welcome upgrade. Better Connectivity The fourth-generation Uconnect system offers better connectivity and a variety of cool enhancements for 2018. It includes a pinch-to-zoom display, faster startup time, improved responsiveness on the touchscreen, enhanced processing power, and better screen brightness and resolution. The standard Uconnect system features a 5-inch screen but available upgrades include a 7-inch or 8.4-inch screen. The standard model features Siri, Bluetooth Streaming Audio, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, and more. The optional 8.4-inch screen also includes navigation with turn-by-turn directions, Android Audio and Apple CarPlay support, SiriusXM Traffic, SiriusXM Travel Link, and more. Ready for Adventure Although there are a lot of luxurious upgrades for 2018, the Jeep Wrangler is still ideal for rugged outdoor adventures. Wrangler's buttons, knobs, and toggles have undergone testing to ensure maximum function. Rubber surrounding the touchscreen, switches, and start/stop button has been expertly designed to be both durable and ergonomic. Climbing in and out is easier with grab handles built into the A-pillar and B-pillar. These also offer extra support when off-roading. For 2018, the wash-out interior includes all-new, one-way drain valves on the floor that allow water out. Once you remove the interior carpet, you can use a hose to wash out the interior. Here's what makes a Jeep Trail Rated. What Does It Mean for a Jeep to Be Trail Rated? When Trail Rated Jeeps were first introduced in 2004, they changed the way consumers bought vehicles. Now drivers could own a vehicle that was built for both the road and off-road adventures. The Trail Rated badge has become a trusted indicator of a vehicle's durability and adaptability to any circumstance. In order for a Jeep to become Trail Rated, the Jeep must pass strict specifications regarding vehicle traction, maneuverability, ground clearance, water fording, and off-road articulation. Those specifications allow a Jeep to overcome bad weather, challenging terrain, and other obstacles without hindering the driving experience. When a Jeep enters a high level of water, it seals off electrical connections and body openings. Air intakes are also positioned higher up on a Trail Rated Jeep to avoid being flooded. Maneuverability When driving off-road or in dangerous road conditions, every movement of the tires matters. Jeep takes this into account when their vehicles become Trail Rated. Your Jeep must be able to respond quickly enough to avoid obstacles without losing traction. That means these Jeeps have precise steering and wheelbases optimized for handling narrow trails and dangerous situations without putting you in danger. Articulation Whether on the road or off, a Trail Rated Jeep must be able to remain stable. When a Jeep is articulate, that means the vehicle has a flexible suspension that can handle potholes and sharp dips in the road or trail.
