Your car AC not working could be caused by mechanical, electrical, or refrigerant issues. Each problem presents its symptoms, and your Chrysler dealer has expert technicians to find and fix the problem. These are a few examples of AC problems we can fix for you.

Burning Smell From the ACCar A/C | Alexandria, VA

When you turn on the AC, you expect cold air, not burning smells. A burning smell is an immediate cause for concern. We advise shutting the AC down immediately and calling our service department. Our Chrysler-trained technicians will investigate the cause of the problem. If you continue to use the AC, you could damage one of its components or potentially start a fire in the AC system.

If the burning smell has the odor of hot metal, the problem could be from a worn condenser, a damaged compressor, or a failing evaporator. In all these cases, the hot metal smell means they’re overworking. If, however, you smell burning plastic, this means that you could have a short in the wiring or other electrical problems. The burning plastic smell means insulation on some of the wiring is burning.

Musty Smell From the AC

A musty, earthy smell from the AC may be a sign of mold in the AC ducts or a build-up of stagnant water that isn’t draining from the system. This foul smell can also be bad for your health as mold spores can cause allergic reactions for many drivers. Stagnant water can collect in the AC if the drainage pipe becomes blocked. This pipe runs through the floor of your car and leaves the water puddles you see underneath a car in summer.

Mold spores can enter your AC in the air drawn in through the vent for cooling. In winter, when your AC is off for several months, these organisms can multiply in the ducts and AC air filter. Our technicians can swiftly remove this problem by using an anti-mold cleaning solution which we’ll pump into your AC.

AC Is Only Cold When You’re Driving Fast

The dial on your dash controls your AC temperature. If you notice that your AC is colder when you’re driving fast, the most likely cause of the problem is a worn compressor. The speed your car is traveling should not affect the AC temperature.

The reason the AC becomes colder is that the faster airflow through the air vent forces the worn compressor to work harder. Our technicians will need to examine the compressor, and we’ll repair or replace it depending on its condition.

If you see signs of these or any other AC problem, call us at Ourisman Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Alexandria.
