Our home, Alexandria, VA nestles peacefully on the banks of the inspiring Potomac River, and we’re a mere 7.5 miles from Washington, DC. We enjoy all the benefits of being in an urban environment, yet we’re still close to the natural beauty of northern Virginia. Our history stretches back to 1669, and as we have grown so have the number of our local attractions. These are a selection of our favorites that visitors to our fine city are sure to enjoy

Alexandria City Hall & Market SquareCity Hall Market Square | Alexandria, VA

Located at 301 King Street in the Old Town neighborhood, our City Hall is not only the seat of our city’s government but also a historic building. The building was originally built in 1871-1874, is constructed in Second Empire style, with masonry being walls, cast-iron columns, and wooden floors and ceiling joists. Originally, the police, courts, and fire department were all housed here, but as our town grew these essential services migrated to new venues of their own.

The southern facade faces onto Market Square, a large landscaped plaza with a beautiful central fountain. Every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm, bustling farmers market occupies this plaza. If you visit our city on a Saturday, be sure to check out the stalls as you can easily pick up some great bargains.

The Basilica of Saint Mary

The oldest Catholic church in Virginia, this magnificent basilica was dedicated in 1795. President George Washington himself made the first contribution to the building. As you enter, you instantly feel a sense of peace and tranquility, and the classic marble sanctuary immediately draws your eyes. Light fills the basilica through the many beautifully designed stained glass windows. The basilica can be found at 310 South Royal Street.

George Washington Masonic National Memorial

This memorial, dedicated to the life of President George Washington, was originally proposed in 1852, and the building itself was built from 1923-to 1973. The building is nine floors high, and floors 3 to 9 form a tower soaring into the sky and capped with a pyramid. The design is based on the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria in Egypt and is built in classical style.

Numerous portraits of President Washington adorn the interior walls, and statues and busts are displayed throughout the building. The memorial is a functioning Freemason lodge, and also a museum filled with personal artifacts and memorabilia of our first President. Visitors can join guided tours of the memorial, but self-guided visitors are limited to visiting certain rooms only. This beautiful memorial is open from 9 am to 5 pm daily, and can be found at 101 Callahan Drive.
