1. Huntley Meadows Park
This Park has trails for bikes, pets, and pedestrians with a boardwalk feature and visitor center. As you wind through the wetlands and trek the trails, photograph the abundant and diverse wildlife or explore with the family. This trail is easy and not more than 1.2 miles, so bring the little ones for a day of fun.
2. Dora Kelley Nature Park
Even locals are surprised by this hidden gem; with miles of paved trails, it’s a great spot to go for a run. Wander the trails, play in the creek, watch the turtles and frogs at the pond, and spend time in the picnic areas; the beauty and tranquility that hikers find here will be sure to put you in a state of ease.
3. Jones Point Park
Jones Point is filled with bike and running paths, and the Mt. Vernon Trail goes through here as well. It’s mostly concrete, but the site manages to maintain pockets of greenspace; there are playgrounds, and with the open pavement visitors will see people playing ball, riding bicycles, or taking photos. This locale is very dog-friendly but reminds visitors that dogs must be always on leashes no longer than six feet; there is no off-leash area here.
4. Mason Neck
With miles of paved trails, playgrounds, a canoe launch, and a visitor’s center, it’s no wonder hikers enjoy this natural haven that abuts a federal wildlife refuge. There are overlooks and bridges, as well as a 1-mile bay view walk; those that want some time on the water but don’t own a canoe or kayak can rent them here for the day. Go on one of their guided canoe tours and take in all the site has to offer, you won’t be disappointed.
5. Winkler Botanical Preserve
This 44-acre, fenced-in nature haven is tucked away off 395, making it a bit of a secret spot to which you should make your way. There are streams, multiple trails, a lake, and a beautiful waterfall, all surrounded by lush plant life; it’s truly an oasis in the middle of this urban area. This is a local teaching source for Alexandria schools, so bring the kids and make it a day of learning and exploration.
